Wheel Power Christian Cyclists (WPCC)
We are proud to have Judy Bowman as a member of our Kirk fellowship, She founded
WPCC in the early 1990's for the purpose of reaching the lost for Christ, affirming the
Gospel by demonstrating God's love in action and challenging and training team members
to be effective witnesses, all from the platform of a bicycle. Wheel Power's initial effort in
1994 was their "Across America Mission Trip" which they have accomplished many times.
This massive effort encompasses about 90 days, across 4,000 miles, 20-25 team
members, staying overnight in local churches along the way. It is complete with ministry
programs. These trips provide opportunities to witness to thousands of people, resulting in
hundreds of decisions for Christ. Recently, WPCC has organized many shorter local
mission trips in several states and are developing a bicycling ministry to "special needs"
adults and children. For more information on Wheel Power go to WheelPower.org Meet
the founder at WheelPower.org/founder.html

city children and their families. The purpose is to share God's love by cooperative efforts
that strengthen the quality of life (physical, spiritual, social and educational) of it's
participants. Formed in 1970, CUM was an outgrowth of a summer Timothy Program
which began in 1952 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. An estimated 200 children are
involved in the various on-going programs: Camp Timothy, II Timothy (after school
tutorial), TYMS (Training Young Men Successfully), Community Christmas and Easter
programs, community worship/fellowship events, Food Pantry and Fund Raisers.
Intervarsity
In response to God's love, grace and truth: The purpose of Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship/USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing
communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love
of God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in
the world. Intervarsity has 832 undergraduate chapters on 564 campuses. Some
campuses have separate outreaches to international students, sororities and fraternities,
and ethnic minority groups. During the 2003-2004 school year, over 33,000 students were
actively involved in Intervarsity chapters. 880 field support staff support these student
groups. The financial contribution from The Kirk is used locally on the campuses of
Randolph Macon Women'sCollege and Lynchburg College.
Maritime Discipleship
Clif and Lynn Mahon began the Maritime Discipleship minister in 1999. They are currently
based in Tampa, FL. Maritime Discipleship is committed to reaching the island nations and
seaports of the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging the development of
Christian character and leadership skills through the use of boats and sail-training.
Sail-training combined with cross-cultural ministry and service to others creates an
environment for dynamic team-building, character development, leadership training,
missions and discipleship. Instruction in sail handling, navigation, passage making, safety
at sea, and ship management requires each participant to confront many demanding
challenges,
both physical and emotional. It also requires self-confidence and the acceptance of
personal responsibility, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks. Sail-training
helps people learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents and
understand the value of others and working as a team. To learn more about Maritime

Marriage Alliance of Central Virginia
The Marriage Alliance of Central Virginia (MACV) Is an independent, nonprofit organization
that supports healthy marriages and families by providing training and resources for
premarital preparation, marriage education, parenting and relationship skills, along with
other efforts to promote a positive marriage and family culture in our community. Healthy,
stable marriages benefit adults and children alike. In contrast, divorce, cohabitation and
intimate partner conflict and violence have a negative impact that reverberates throughout
the community. Effective premarital preparation, marriage education and relationship skills
training can help those who choose marriage for themselves to form and sustain healthy
marriages and diminish those negative influences in Central Virginia. The Marriage
Alliance was begun by pastors and other religious leaders because most marriages begin
in a house of worship, and we believe that our congregations are a good place to begin
the transformation of our culture to be more pro-marriage and pro-family. Today the
Alliance is a broad coalition of faith communities, agencies, businesses and individuals
throughout the Central Virginia area that support healthy marriages and families. It is
non-partisan and non-sectarian. Larry Compter, a member of The Kirk, is Executive
Director.
Miller Home of Lynchburg
Two members of our church are past directors of Miller Home. Founded in 1875 by the
generosity of Samual Miller, a local tobacco wholesaler, Miller Home has been home for
over 900 girls, ages 2-18. Their stated purpose is "to provide short-term or long-term care
and guidance to non-delinquent girls, who cannot live with their own families." Every care
is made to provide this within a non-institutional, supportive environment which
encourages each girl to grow and develop to her highest potential. Girls as you grow in the
Lord, know that you are loved. To learn more about The Miller Home click on:

World-wide
Lampstand - Indonesia - Roger and Janice Dixon
Roger is an ordained United Methodist pastor. While serving several Virginia churches in
the 1960's, Roger and Jan heard God's call to the unreached people in Indonesia. While
living there they raised their three children, planted several churches, discipled many
nationals and started a christian school known as Lampstand. Mathew 5: 14 & 15 "You are
the light of the world, keep your lamp on the stand for all the world to see." Roger
continues to teach and is sought after to share his knowledge in reaching the unreached
of the world. Last year Jan spent many months after the great tsunami counseling and
setting up help centers in Indonesia. The Dixons are still very involved in providing workers
and financial support for Lampstand and the work they started.
Bruce and Katie, East Asia
Mission Commission - Shane and Erin Carter
While attending Liberty University Shane and Erin met, fell in love and married as they
graduated. Shane served The Kirk as a youth worker while at LU and participated in
several short term mission trips to India. He felt God was calling him, and later both of
them, to plant churches and train nationals for ministry. Thus the name Mission
Commission from the Great Commission in Mathew 28:19 "Go into all the world and make
disciples." They have added a ministry to orphans to the time they spend in India. In
addition to their teaching and ministering, Shane and Erin are dad and mom to Caleb and
Eve.
Living Hope Children's Home; Uganda
God called Pat Mendoza to Uganda during a short term mission trip to the country with
Sports Outreach headquartered in Monroe, VA. She received training in children's ministry
through Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF). While ministering in Uganda, starting Bible
clubs and training nationals to do children's ministry, Pat took several homeless children
into her home. Later she met a local pastor and his wife who are doing the same for
homeless children. Together they built an orphanage that in a few years grew to be home
to eighty children, providing shelter, food, clothes, schooling and even digging a well since
there was no water on the property. Pat is no longer part of the orphanage, but continues
to support a core of trained nationals who organize and conduct training seminars and
conferences to teach youth workers in children's ministry. This is an important outreach
known as Children's Outreach Ministry (COM) which has provided training for world vision
youth workers in the rebel country in northern Uganda. Pat goes back once a year to
encourage these COM workers and to monitor the ministry.
International Teams (IT) Paul and Reinhold Sydnor
Paul and RG Sydnor live in Austria near Innsbrook and minister to refugees coming out of
war torn communist countries. They enlist and train nationals to do the work of ministry
which includes making contacts, overcoming language barriers, providing for needs
(food, clothing, shelter), setting up educational opportunities, Bible studies, and searching
for avenues for permanent placement. In addition, they are providing leadership for a new
Christian school and a refugee house. Paul has been asked by IT to lead and coordinate
the work of several refugee ministries in Europe which requires a great deal of travel. Paul
grew up in Lynchburg as a member of Westminster and Rivermont Presbyterian Churches,
graduated form Virginia Tech and Gordon-Conwell Seminary. While traveling in Europe
with Up With People after high school he fell in love with the people and one beautiful
German girl, Reinhold. Paul and RG have three children: Tessia, Luke and Noah.
St. Vincent's Centre for Handicapped Children - Port-au-Prince, Haiti
"The blind receive sight and the lame walk. The deaf and the poor have the Gospel
preached to them." Mathew 11:5 is the biblical basis for this institution to minister to
handicapped children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Founded in 1945, they now enroll 430
students, 170 of which are residents. St. Vincent's provides education, a nursery, clinics
treating over 500 patients each month, physical therapy, eye care, a brace shop, and
many activities including music and art. The enrollment includes 85 deaf-mute and 93 blind
students.
Hospital St. Croix - Leogane, Haiti
Holy Cross Hospital located not far from Port-au-Prince attempts to bring surgery, healing
and hope to those living close enough to use these services. From babies to the elderly,
doctors and nurses work to insure adequate health care with limited facilities and finances.
Natives from distant villages are trained to be village health workers, essentially a first aid
person who can treat accidents and act as a midwife. The hospital also has well baby
clinics teaching mothers how to better care for infants. The Kirk sends money to assist in
the emergency room which is always lacking funding for supplies.
